Key Info

Jae Santos started at the Australian Museum as the digitising technical officer for malacology. After 18 months in that role, he transitioned to become one of our EMu database support officers. Currently, his work involves the administration and user training of the museum’s collection management system.

Some examples of this work include:

  • Developing training materials and delivering training sessions.
  • Facilitating the preparation and ingest of data from digitisation projects and expeditions.
  • Advising on standards to support accuracy and accessibility of museum data for staff, researchers, and the public.

Before joining the Australian Museum in 2020, Jae worked and volunteered with the Auckland War Memorial Museum in New Zealand, rehousing and digitising their marine invertebrate collection.

Jae has a background in cephalopod taxonomy – his MSc research used an integrative taxonomic approach to describe new bottletail squids (Sepiolida: Sepiadariidae) from New Zealand waters.

In addition to his technical role in collections systems, Jae puts his teaching experience to use by participating in the Australian Museum’s outreach and education events such as ‘Early Birds: Autism and Sensory-Friendly Mornings’ and ‘Scientist for a Day: Malacology’.
