One hundred years ago, Shackleton’s goal was to save his men from the ice. Today it is the ice that needs saving from us and the human-induced climate change that threatens it. Thin Ice VR brings to life a story of survival at a time when we urgently need to learn how to prevail against the challenges we face. Tim Jarvis AM
In 1914, polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton led the ill-fated Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, which became one of history’s greatest stories of leadership and survival. After his ship became trapped in the ice, Shackleton, risking an almost certain death, set sail on an ill-equipped lifeboat, travelling 1,300km to save his crew. More than a century on, modern-day adventurer Tim Jarvis AM recreated the famous events of Shackleton’s voyage, where he discovered that climate change had drastically impacted the region.
In this immersive VR experience, produced by award-winning studio Monkeystack, follow in the footsteps of Shackleton and relive the treacherous expedition. As part of Shackleton's crew, experience the moment the Endurance slipped below the ice, leaving the explorers stranded and alone. Journey through the Antarctic, trekking over perilous ice peaks and down steep icy descents on the quest for safer ground. Stand within shifting glacier walls and uncover an unsettling reality. Shackleton was on a mission to save his men from the ice. Today, we must save the ice from us. See with your own eyes the devastating effects of climate change on the region, as thawing ice threatens the balance of this delicate ecosystem.
Thin Ice VR is an unmissable experience. Book today!

Supervising adults who are not participating in the VR experience will be admitted without charge. Thin Ice VR has a running time of more than 20 minutes, and younger children may find VR headsets difficult to sustain for the duration of the video. All viewers have the option to remove the headset at any time and can continue to enjoy the film on the large screen without the VR element.
VR experiences are not recommended for people with the following conditions: pacemaker or other implanted medical devices, severe motion sickness or vertigo, fear of enclosed spaces, and other conditions, which may be aggravated by this virtual reality experience.
Thin Ice VR gives us all a chance to experience the wonder of this place with our own eyes, where we can see for ourselves the impact of climate change over the last 100 years. James Calvert (Director, Thin Ice VR)
FAQs
VR, short for virtual reality, allows people to be fully immersed in a fabricated environment.
Visitors to the Thin Ice VR experience will wear a VR headset fitted over the head and covering the eyes. The headset will block out the outside world to make it appear and feel as if what you see through the headset is what you are experiencing in real life.
All headsets track your head movements so the image you see adjusts accordingly allowing you to 'look around’ and control aspects of the video experience.
